The Thompson submachine gun is an American submachine gun.
Also known as the Tommy Gun, Trench Broom, and several other nicknames, the Thompson machine gun was one of the most well known firearms in the twentieth century. It was notorious for its use by criminals as well as law enforcement units during the 1920s and early 1930s; its users were appreciative of the gun's high rate of fire and stopping power, which made it very effective at close range combat. Later it saw extensive use by the United States as well as a few other nations under the wartime variants M1928 and M1. Even though there were other submachine guns such as the M3 submachine gun and Sten produced as a more economic alternative, they were never able to fully replace the Thompson. Even after the war the Thomspon continued to see service in the immediate years before assault rifles became more readily available as a military service firearm.
In Battlegroup42, the M1A1 Thompson submachine gun is the primary weapon of the American medic class outside Pacific theatre, as well as that for the Greek medic class. It is also available as a primary weapon for the British assault class on 4406-Pegasus Bridge.
