The Gato-class submarine is an American submarine.
As a result of a continious submarine evolution the US Navy commisioned 73 boats of the Gato-class between 1943 and 1945, which became Americas first mass produced submarine type. They were large boats with heavy armament, made for long range patrol duties in the Pacific. The Gatos formed the backbone of the US submarine force and were responsible for sinking a large portion of the vital Japanese merchant navy and many warships.
In Battlegroup42, the Gato submarine is equipped with six torpedo tubes in the stern, and four more in the aft. The torpedoes have slow reload speed. In addition to the torpedoes, the Gato-class also has a 102mm deck gun for engaging surface targets where there is no immediate threat to the submarine itself. It is also equipped with a 20mm Oerlikon autocannon for anti-air defense.
The Gato-class is modified from the original Battlefield 1942's Gato model.
