France is one of the Allies of World War Two.
France and Britain declared war on Germany when it invaded Poland in September 1939. After little fighting in the first year, Germany invaded France in May 1940, overwhelming its opponents and causing France to formally surrender in the next month.
With the Armistice of 22 June 1940, France and its overseas territories were split into those who sided with the Axis power, and those who continue to side with the Allies; they became Vichy France and Free France respectively.
