The Macchi C.205 is an Italian fighter.

Description[]

The Macchi C.205 Veltro is a further development of the Macchi C.202, equipped with a more powerful engine and stronger armament: While the 12.7mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns have been retained, the 7.7mm machine guns on the wings were replaced by 20mm MG 151 cannons. Much like its predecessor, it was highly respected due to its speed and turning capabilities. In fact, it could easily cope with allied fighters like the Mustang or the Spitfire, making the C.205 one of the best fighters of the war.

The C.205 enters service in 1943 in small numbers and became famous for its formidable performance during the battle for Pantelleria and the defense of Rome. After the armistice, most survivors served with the Italian Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR) as part of the Axis, a small number also flew for the Allies under the Italian Co-belligerent Air Force.
