The Akizuki-class destroyer is a Japanese destroyer.
Description[]
From 1941, Japan launched a series of 12 large destroyers, named after the leading ship Akizuki. Their intended role was mainly to support larger ships with anti-air defence. For this, the ships were equipped with eight 100mm rapid firing dual-purpose guns and up to 51 barrels of 25mm anti-air cannons. Because of their size, the Akizuki-class was often mistaken as light cruisers by the Americans. Some of these ships escorted the Battleship Yamato during the Operation Ten-gō, receiving much damage but without sharing its fate. Six of them survived the war.
Compared with older destroyers like the Kagero-class, the Akizuki-class in BattleGroup42 has more guns but fewer torpedo tubes. The ships are less effective against large naval units, but very effective against small vessels and aircraft.
It can be found on mid-to-late Pacific maps, such as 4409-Operation Stalemate and 4410-Clash on Surigao.
Trivia[]
- The Akizuki-class is based on the original Battlefield 1942's Hatsuzuki. The model was modified to better match the real ships, which included the correct number of turrets and adding battle stations for torpedoes and AA guns.
- The Akizuki-class destroyer also appears as static models in a number of maps (such as 4004-Narvik and 4205-Operation Ironclad), where they serve as shipwrecks or static ships with controllable defense guns.
