Churchill is a British tank.
Description
The Churchill was the successor of Matilda II and Valentine, and was also the last of the infantry tank designs. Slow but well armoured, the tank has been continuously upgraded and served alongside other tanks until the end of the war.
Churchill Mk III
The Mk III is armed with a 6-pounder gun, which is adequate against medium tanks, but not against the armour of heavy tanks. It also has Besa machine guns in the coaxial mount and at the front of the hull to defend itself from enemy infantry.
This version appears in maps up to late 1942. The Soviet Union also received a number of Churchill Mk III under the Lend-Lease program.
Churchill NA75
The NA75 is a variant of the Mk III by refitting the gun and the mantlet with those of M4 Sherman tanks, and as a result the Besa machine gun in the coaxial mount is replaced by the M1919 Browning machine gun. The Besa machine gun mounted at the front of the hull remains untouched.
This variant is mainly used in Italy around 1943.
Churchill Mk VII
Sometimes known as the "Heavy Churchill", the Mk VII is a major redesign fitted with the the Ordnance QF 75 mm, which is a modified version of the earlier 6-pounder gun to adapt the ammunition used by American medium tanks. The heavy frontal armour helps the tank to endure heavy enemy gunfire that other tanks cannot.
The Mk VII appears in the European theatre from June 1944 onwards.
